Honey BBQ Grilled Chicken Wings are the easiest way to make your favorite crispy and saucy snack! With Head Country Bar-B-Q’s newest Honey BBQ sauce, these wings are perfect for sharing and dipping in an easy, creamy dip.
Who else loves to get down on a big ol’ platter full of wings?!
Crispy and fresh off the grill, slathered in your favorite sauce, and served alongside a dipping sauce, grilled bbq chicken wings are one of my favorite foods to eat. I remember before having Babycakes, the Man and I would regularly hit up a local joint for wings and beers, especially during the summer.
I certainly can’t resist them, especially when they are extra SAUCY.
And since we are talking about sauciness, let’s talk about that SAUCE.
Friends, I am SUPER excited about this one because Head Country Bar-B-Q has a NEW FLAVOR. That flavor? Honey.
Head Country Bar-B-Q already brings a pack of punchy flavor with all the sauces they already carry, but this new honey bbq sauce is a whole new level of finger-lickin’ good flavor. For me, it’s that this BBQ sauce isn’t too sweet. It has that beautiful honey flavor with the touch of sweetness you’d expect, but it also has this blend of spices and smoke that give the sauce so much depth of flavor.
It’s IDEAL for chicken in any form, but especially grilled chicken wings!
ingredients
chicken wings – I like to buy my chicken wings whole and break them down into drummettes and flats myself, because it takes only 5 minutes and you end up saving money in the end. If you don’t want to go through the work, buy them broken down.
honey bbq sauce – the star of honey bbq wings is the honey bbq sauce of course! It’s officially my new favorite barbecue sauce. You can pick it up online or at most local grocery stores. Click here to find the closest store to you!
seasoning – to season the wings, I toss them with this original championship seasoning. The rich blend of spices pairs perfectly with the honey bbq sauce. You’ll also need it to add to the dip!
mayonnaise – the base of the dip is a mayo/sour cream combo. I recommend using mayonnaise and not Miracle Whip!
sour cream – full fat sour cream is best here for the flavor, but you can also use light if you prefer.
milk – any kind of milk (whole, skim, 2%, etc) works! You can even use an unflavored alternate milk if you wish.
this recipe’s must haves
The must-haves start with honey bbq sauce and original championship seasoning from Head Country Bar-B-Q!
If you are breaking down the wings yourself, you will need a good quality chef’s knife or butcher knife and a plastic cutting board.
I like to have two large bowls from my metal mixing bowls set to first coat the wings in the seasoning for cooking, and then coat the wings in the bbq sauce after cooking.
My favorite grill is this Traeger grill. It’s a BEAST and I love the size. Perfect for weeknight grilling and grilling for your backyard parties. You’ll also need a silicone brush to brush the wings with bbq sauce as they cook.
here’s how to make honey bbq grilled chicken wings recipe
coat wings
In a large bowl, toss the wings with the seasoning, coating them evenly. Set aside and preheat your grill to high heat (400˚F). Lightly oil the grill grates with canola oil.
grill
Place wings on the grill and cover. Cook for 30 minutes, turning then halfway through cooking, until the skin crisps up and the wings are cooked through. To know they are cooked through, measure the internal temp with a meat thermometer. It should register at 165˚F.
In the final 5 minutes of cooking, brush the wings with 1/3 cup of the bbq sauce. Cover it again and cook for 5 minutes.
make dip
As the wings cook, stir together the ingredients for the dipping sauce in a small bowl until combined.
Set aside in the refrigerator until ready to serve. This is also a great component of the recipe to make ahead of time! It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 days.
sauce
Remove the wings from the grill and add to a large, clean bowl. Toss to coat the wings in the remaining sauce. Serve with dipping sauce!
tips for success
you can use frozen. If you are using frozen wings, just make sure to completely thaw them before you start the recipe. I recommend leaving them in the refrigerator overnight.
preheat the grill. I like to let my grill come to the proper temp and then let it sit for 15 minutes before adding the wings. This helps with the wings cooking evenly and gives you a nice caramelization on the outside.

do you put sauce on before or after grilling?
You actually sauce the wings DURING cooking and after! I like to brush my wings with the sauce in the final 5 minutes of cooking because it gives the wings a bit of a glaze. I feel like this helps the sauce stick to the wings better!
how do you keep chicken wings from sticking to the grill?
Oil the grates! I like to drizzle canola oil on a paper towel and use tongs to rub the oiled towel on the grill grates. It’s an easy way to oil the grill and you can even do it when the grill is hot without burning your fingers.
