about these nutella puff pastry pies
If you’re as passionate about Nutella as I am, you’re in for a treat today. I’m thrilled to share a delectable and incredibly easy recipe for Nutella puff pastry pies that’s about to become your new dessert obsession.
Wondering what these pies are all about? Flaky, golden-brown puff pastry enveloping a luscious Nutella filling, sprinkled with crunchy, toasted hazelnuts… It doesn’t get much better than this.
I’ve been obsessed with Nutella for decades now, and this love is never going away. Anytime we walk into a pastry shop and there is Nutella on the menu, you can bet that is the pastry I am ordering.
While I love going out for fresh pastry whenever I can, sometimes I love a lazy weekend morning or afternoon at home to make these pies. They are perfect for dessert, breakfast or brunch, and even an afternoon snack with a mug of tea or coffee.
The truth is, these are so easy and they don’t require a bunch of ingredients to bring together. It’s kind of my little cheat recipe to make guests think I worked really hard in the kitchen, when it really took me about 15 minutes and the oven did the rest of the job for me.
Even if you’re not a seasoned baker, these pies are perfect for beginners, and they’ll turn out beautifully every time.
ingredients
puff pastry. You can use one sheet of store bought puff pastry, or make your own! The key with store bought is to make sure that you thaw it out before using it. This will take about 30 to 40 minutes at room temperature. For more details, see my Tips for Success section below.
nutella. The best chocolate hazelnut spread out there! Don’t even try to argue with me on this one. My love for Nutella runs very deep.
egg. Beat one large egg lightly to brush on the pastry. This is what gives it such a gorgeous look and color.
sugar. Use raw sugar or turbinado sugar to sprinkle on top.
nuts. Chopped hazelnuts add an extra crunch inside these soft and flaky pastries.
this recipe’s must haves
To prepare the puff pastry, you will need a clean work surface like a countertop or a marble slab. Use a rolling pin (I like to use a marble rolling pin to keep the pastry cool) to roll out the dough lightly.
A silicone brush comes in handy for brushing the pastry with egg.
Finally you will need a half sheet baking pan and silicone mat to bake the pastries.
here’s how to make nutella puff pastry pies
prepare pastry
Make sure that the puff pastry sheet is thawed. Sprinkle a clean countertop or flat work surface lightly with flour.
Roll the sheet out lightly, then cut into 6 equal squares.
add filling
Spread one half of each pastry square with 2 Tbsp Nutella, making sure to leave a thin border around the edges. Sprinkle each glob of Nutella with 1/2 Tbsp chopped hazelnuts.
fold, seal, and brush
Brush the edges of the square with egg, then fold the pastry over the Nutella half. Use a fork to seal the edges well.
Brush the tops of the pastries with egg. Sprinkle with raw sugar. Cut 2 to 3 small slits in the top of each pastry.
bake
Bake on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat for 15 to 20 minutes at 400˚F. The pastries should be golden and puffed.
Remove from the oven to cool for a few minutes on the pan before serving warm.
tips and tricks
fully thaw puff pastry. Do not forget that puff pastry takes time to thaw! If you are using store bought puff pastry, remove it from the box and wrapping. Thaw the puff pastry sheets until it unfolds easily, about 30 to 40 minutes. You can also thaw it in the microwave, but you really have to keep a close eye on it so it doesn’t get too warm. Wrap one sheet in a paper towel and microwave for 15 seconds.
don’t forget to cut slits on top. Be sure to cut the slits on top of these pastries before baking them. Otherwise your pastries might leak or explode as they bake in the oven.
keep the pastry cool. You will want to work efficiently to make sure that the puff pastry doesn’t get too warm. This is more important in the summer, but if you keep your house warm, it’s best to work quickly. That’s why I recommend having the ingredients measured out and ready to go before you start the recipe. You can also help keep the pastry cool by working on a marble or quartz countertop.

how do I crimp the edges of the pastry?
Use a fork! All you need to do is use the tongs of the fork to create the little crimped effect around the edges of these puff pastry pies.
do I have to use chopped hazelnuts?
No you don’t! I like the added texture element when biting into the nutella puff pastry, but you can simply omit them from the recipe if you prefer.
how do I get the puff pastry perfectly golden brown?
Use egg wash! You will need to brush the tops of the pastry with lightly beaten egg to achieve the golden brown look you see here. If you skip the step, while the puff pastry will get lightly golden, it won’t look lacquered like laminated pastry should.
can I use homemade puff pastry?
You certainly can! Use homemade puff pastry or use store-bought puff pastry. Both options work well in this recipe.
can I make this nut-free?
If you are allergic to nuts, you can use a chocolate spread that doesn’t use nuts. In addition, simply omit the chopped hazelnuts or swap them out for chocolate sprinkles instead.

what to serve with nutella puff pastry pies
Nutella puff pastry pies are ideal for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or dessert! I personally like to enjoy them in the morning or in the afternoon, and always with a big cup of coffee. Being a pastry lover, these pies remind me of the delicious pastries I get in local bakeries, but easily recreated at home.
Add them to a breakfast spread with your favorite savory dishes like scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage. If you need some inspiration for creative breakfasts, here’s some ideas to start with:

how to store and freeze
Store. These nutella puff pastry pies are best served fresh the same day they are made. Though they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a couple of days, they will not be as flakey the next day.
Reheat. If you do have leftovers, reheat them in the oven until warmed through or in a toaster oven.
