about this mojito
Today’s cocktail is all about vacation vibes… It’s a classic mojito!
I always loved a good mojito, especially in my college days. As soon as I was 21+ I had my first ever mojito, and I was hooked. There were many summers spent sitting on a patio under blue skies and a hot sun sipping on a fresh mojito.
What makes a mojito so special? It’s all about the balanced blend of Bacardi rum (the OG mojito maker), zesty fresh limes, simple syrup, and cool mint leaves. Add a splash of soda water, and you’ve got a drink that’s crisp, refreshing, bubbly, and not too sweet.
Mojitos are super easy to whip up, even when you’ve got a yard full of guests. Plus they are a timeless classic! Set up a little mojito station with rum, lime wedges, mint sprigs, and simple syrup. Let everyone muddle their own mint and lime – it’s interactive, fun, and takes the pressure off you (which you know is always my goal in life). That fresh mint aroma will have your whole patio smelling like a tropical paradise any time of day.
do I have to use bacardi as the base spirit?
Nope, you don’t have to use Bacardi! While Bacardi rum is the classic choice for a traditional mojito – they’ve been making rum in Cuba since 1862 and pretty much put real mojitos on the map – it’s your party, so it’s your call.
Any good white rum will do the trick in this recipe. You could even switch it up with different types of rum:
- Cuban rums (if you can get them) for total authenticity
- Puerto Rican rums for a similar vibe as a light-bodied variant
- Jamaican rums for a funkier flavor
- Coconut rum if you’re feeling extra tropical
The key is finding a spirit that plays nice with lime and mint without overpowering them. So feel free to raid your liquor cabinet or try something new. Once you try a mojito, it’ll be the favorite out of all the rum cocktails you’ve tried!
ingredients
rum. Use a high quality white rum for a classic mojito combination. As mentioned above, you can switch up the type of rum to make the mojito taste differently.
lime. Fresh limes are key to making the best mojito possible. The fresh lime juice is simply better!
mint. Only fresh mint leaves will give you the tastiest cocktail! Make sure to get some extra sprigs for garnish.
simple syrup. Either buy simple syrup at your local liquor/grocery store, but the best option is the make it at home. Here’s a whole guide on how to make simple syrup so you can make it yourself. You could also use sugarcane molasses for a different sweet taste in the cocktail!
club soda. Bubbly and light, this is the ideal finishing touch to the cocktail to balance out the other natural flavors.
this recipe’s must-haves
You will need a chef’s knife and cutting board to cut up the limes.
For the cocktail, use a jigger to measure the liquid ingredients. In addition, you will need a muddler and a barspoon or cocktail stirring spoon.
We like to use highball glasses or any other tall glass since this is a tall cocktail!
here’s how to make a bacardi mojito
muddle
Add lime wedges to a highball glass. Pour in simple syrup. Muddle the lime wedges until they break down.
Add in mint leaves and lightly muddle. You only want to do a few twists to prevent muddling the leaves too much. Aggressive muddling of the fresh mint will make it turn bitter in flavor.
assemble
Pour in rum and fill the glass with ice. Stir the mixture, then top with club soda. Give it one final stir, then garnish with a mint sprig.
Pro Tip: Slap the mint sprig in your palm before adding it to the glass as garnish. This will help the mint leaves release their fragrance!
variations
add fruit! Add in a couple of fresh strawberries or fresh blueberries to make this cocktail a little fruity with a berry kick. You could also use mango for a unique twist!
choose a different sweetener. You can use simple syrup, but different flavors of simple syrup will yield different results! Mint simple syrup will intensify the mint flavor. Demerara syrup has a deeper molasses flavor. Honey simple syrup gives a light floral sweetness to the drink.
